Kunsthaus, Zürich

Designed by David Chipperfield, the new extension to Kunsthaus Zurich has doubled the exhibition space while also introducing new spatial qualities. Thanks to its striking presence, the new building has a significant impact on the urban landscape. In the outdoor area, precise light settings emphasise its formal clarity and the sculptural details of the façade.

Inside, the foyer, representative areas, access zones and cloakrooms feature a nuanced light architecture that ensures cohesive visual continuity, clear guidance and a welcoming atmosphere. A uniform type of downlights is used in keeping with the minimalist materiality of the exposed concrete; made from untreated aluminium, the custom-developed housing blends seamlessly into the architectural clarity of the space. On top of this, the light concept makes a material contribution to achieving the objectives of the 2000 Watt Society.
