City Garden, Chur

First opened in 1868, the City Garden park in Chur was redesigned in 1958, acquiring the striking appearance it still has today. During its modernisation in 2018, the extensive grounds underwent gentle improvements, including the addition of a new lighting system.

Michael Josef Heusi was responsible for the outstanding light design project, which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2021 German Light Design Awards.

A special feature of the design is the view that allows visitors to take in the whole park at a glance, including visitor areas, monuments and paths. 
Subtle, well-modulated ambient lighting along the main pathways guides visitors, supports orientation and ensures good facial recognition, creating a sense of security. Custom-designed masks fitted to selective lamps create distinctive light projections, lending the park a magical charm at night.
